Elephant and I Quilt and Pillow

Combining paper piecing and applique in one project is a great way to add new skills or brush up on rusty ones.

Elephant and I Quilt and Pillow Pattern

Things we love about this elephant quilt and pillow sewing project:

  • Bright colors on a neutral background
  • Background comprised of easy-to-sew strips
  • Gender-neutral design
  • Proceeds from the sale of this pattern will be donated to Elephant Nature Park in Thailand

The elephant quilt would be perfect for a nursery, but would also transition well to a big kid room. Omit the child-like figure and the elephant pillow makes a great gift for your favorite animal lover or world traveler.

Yardage is based on 42˝-wide fabric.

  • Colorful fabric scraps (for appliqué): 30–40 pieces of fabric, at least 5˝ × 8˝ each
  • Light- to medium-value neutrals (for background): 1/8–1/2 yard each of 11 different fabrics, to total approximately 31/2 yards
  • Heavy twine: 8 pieces 7˝ long for the tail
  • Tracing paper or foundation paper
  • Lightweight fusible interfacing: 1/4 yard
  • School glue stick
  • Binding: 3/8 yard
  • Backing: 3 3/8 yards
  • Quilt batting: 58˝ × 64˝
