Vinyl is a fantastic material for sewing projects because of its durability, versatility, and modern look. Whether you’re crafting bags, accessories, or home decor items, vinyl can add a professional touch to your creations.
Sewing with vinyl is mostly like sewing using typical substrates with a few additional quirks. We’ve included tips, materials, and projects to ease the learning curve for sewing clear bags.
In this post, we’re sharing 10 sewing patterns that require vinyl, along with a helpful guide on how to sew with vinyl like a pro!
Materials to Sew Vinyl
- Simplify cutting by using a rotary cutter.
- Layering vinyl with tissue paper prevents sticking under the presser foot. You can also use a non-stick foot or Telfon foot. This will allow the pressure foot to glide over the vinyl material with ease.
- Pins create holes in vinyl, so use clips inside of pins.
- Increase your stitch length to avoid weak seams. We suggest a length of 3.0 to 4.0.
- If you find your stitches skipping with a universal size 80/12 needle, try needles made specifically for vinyl.
- DON’T touch vinyl with your iron as you could melt it. Use a pressing cloth or simply hover the iron over the project to soften the vinyl.
