Drawstring Ditty Bag – Free Pattern
Drawstring bags are the perfect beginner sewing projects. If you are ready to learn to sew, this project is a great place to start.
The uses for a drawstring bag are pretty much endless. Let’s start with idea of using them for giftwrap and run down the rabbit hole of options… project bag, lingerie bag, lunch bag, toy bag, makeup bag. You get the idea!
Each bag uses 2 or 3 fabrics allowing you to make the most of your scrap stash. The drawstrings could be made from ribbon, cording, twill tape, or knit fabric strips. Did we mention that this bag pattern is fat quarter friendly!?!
The finished dimensions of the bottom of the bag are 6” x 8” and it stands about 9” tall.
Materials:
- 1/4 yard of fabric for the bag front/back/bottom (FQ friendly!)
- 1/4 yard of fabric for the sides (FQ friendly!)
- 60” of drawstring material of your choice (leather cording, narrow ribbon, 1/4” cotton rope, or 1/4” double fold bias trim that has been sewn together along the edges)
- 2 pony beads for embellishment (optional)

The Drawstring Ditty Bag Tutorial includes a false bottom option to add structure to the bag. We love how the bottom helps maintain the cute shape of the bag.
